Racial Violence & Discrimination
Across the globe, unjust or prejudicial treatment of racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups creates generational disadvantages. What can be done?
ADVOCATING FOR RACIAL RECONCILIATION AND JUSTICE
60% of violent crimes are racially motivated.
Around 6,000 prejudice-motivated crimes targeting a victim because of their perceived membership of a certain social group are committed each year according to the FBI. More than half of these hate crimes are racially motivated.
This heartbreaking reality is not only reported in the United States. Racial discrimination has torn countries and people apart all around the world. The deeply rooted effects of personal and societal racism also creates wide gaps in educational and financial opportunities.
In Revelation 7 we read of “a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.”
Yet, when we examine our own communities, they are often comparatively monolithic. We surround ourselves with people who look and think just like us. And the data is clear. Today, less than 5% of all investment capital (and likely all charitable capital) is deployed in organizations and companies led by women and people of color.
How can the Church respond?
“And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.'” Revelation 5:9-10
Derwin Gray, lead pastor at Transformation Church and former NFL player, shares about his experiences with racism and the Church’s role in racial reconciliation.
